Ze hebben even de kat uit de boom kunnen kijken daar in Spanje. Want hoe vroeg ze ook waren met het tonen van SUV-conceptcars, zo laat komen ze daadwerkelijk met hun eerste Sports Utility Vehicle op de markt. Maar - zonder de hele clou van dit verhaal meteen te verklappen - ze hebben de tijd goed besteed. Wij maakten kennis met de Seat Ateca en vertellen je graag onze bevindingen.

'Created in Barcelona', het is de term die Seat ons er werkelijk in wil rammen als ze de Ateca aan ons voorstellen in… ja natuurlijk, Barcelona. De Spanjaarden lijken er mee te willen bevestigen dat ze niet zomaar het zusje van het grote Volkswagen zijn, maar op eigen benen staan. 'Wij hebben deze auto ontworpen en ontwikkeld in Barcelona en bouwen 'em ook hier', is de boodschap. Valt er iets te verbloemen Seat? Het feit dat er nogal wat Duits bloed door de aderen van de Ateca stroomt is helemaal niets mis mee hoor. En dat het design dankzij de scherpe lijnen en vouwen een hoog Audi-gehalte heeft storen wij ons ook niet aan. Dat valt toch in de smaak? Profiteer daar gerust van.

Typische Seat

Het voelt wat niet-zelfverzekerd aan van de Spanjaarden. Helemaal niet nodig, als je het ons vraagt. Want er staat een smakelijk gelijnde auto voor onze neus. Weliswaar met wat Duitse invloeden, maar toch ook een echte Seat om te zien. Van zijn typerende neus tot de horizontaal breed getrokken lichtunits zien wij veel trekjes van met name de Leon.

Saai zwart

Het feest der herkenning wordt verder gevierd zodra je instapt. Een op de bestuurder gericht dashboard met een brede horizontale strook herkennen we meteen uit het broertje van de Ateca. Ook hier mooi strakke lijnen en geen poespas. Een tikkeltje saai? Als je niet zo van zwart houdt wel. Op een paar chromen sierstripjes na is alles namelijk in die donkere kleur uitgevoerd. En heel veel keuze heb je ook niet. De in diverse kleuren instelbare LED-verlichting en de keuze voor bruine bekleding op het topmodel Xcellence zijn de enige mogelijkheden om kleur te bekennen. Best jammer.

Van camera's tot standkachel

Centraal op het dashboard zit het 8 inch touchscreen waarop de navigatie, audio en instellingen van de auto te bedienen is. De optioneel te bestellen standkachel en het uitgebreide 360 graden camerasysteem projecteren hun informatie hier ook.

Het systeem werkt feilloos en de graphics zijn van hoog niveau. Zoals we van een moderne auto mogen verwachten gaat het koppelen van een smartphone probleemloos en kun je via Android Auto en Google Carplay bovendien bepaalde apps weergeven en bedienen.

Prima zitpositie en ruimte

Seat positioneert de Ateca in het hart het van C-SUV-segment. En daar komt het meteen een opponent uit eigen stal tegen: de Tiguan. Logischerwijs maken wij dan ook al snel de koppeling naar die auto zodra we in de Ateca zitten. Op papier is de Tiguan toch een slordige 12 cm langer. Best een verschil. Maakt dat de Ateca ineens een kleintje? Zeer zeker niet. De wielbasis van 2,64 meter is nog altijd heel gemiddeld in deze klasse. En het gaat om de praktijkervaring. Of je nu voor- of achterin zit, de hoofd- en beenruimte zijn prima voor elkaar. De Tiguan is alleen nog net even iets rianter. En eerlijk is eerlijk, die voelt ook hoogwaardiger aan. Van de sierstrips op het dasboard tot de extra chromen accenten.

De praktische kant

Wie dat wenst kan in de Ateca voor 510 liter (485 liter voor de 4Drive) aan bagage meenemen. En dan passen er, mits niet al te groot, prima drie kinderen op de achterbank. In tegenstelling tot de Tiguan is die in de Ateca niet verschuifbaar. Verhuisplannen? Met de bank plat past er 1.604 liter in de Spaanse SUV. Handige features als een keurig wegklapbare trekhaak alsook een 'handsfree' achterklep – waarbij je met een schopbeweging onder de achterbumper de klep opent – behoren tot de mogelijkheden. Gericht op praktisch gemak voor alledag, dat moge duidelijk zijn.

De spits in Barcelona

Dat de Ateca 'Created in Barcelona' is zullen we letterlijk voelen ook, moet Seat gedacht hebben. We worstelen ons de stad door waar op dat moment precies de spits in volle gang is. Van verkeerslicht tot verkeerslicht staat het rijen dik terwijl scooters en taxi's ons links en rechts om de oren vliegen. Prettig aan een SUV als de Ateca is dat je goed zicht rondom hebt. En ook elektronische hulpmiddelen als een dodehoek-detectie en 360 graden camera zijn dan toch wel heel prettig. Jammer alleen dat we nu net niet in de versie met DSG-automaat zitten en gebruik kunnen maken van de Traffic Jam Assist, dan hoeven we niet te koppelen, te schakelen, gas te geven en te remmen. De Ateca zou dat allemaal overnemen.

Lol in de bochten

Eenmaal de Sagrada Familia, Camp Nou en de Ramblas achter ons gelaten betreden we de Spaanse tolwegen. De Ateca blijkt uitstekende geschikt voor het afleggen van lange afstanden. De 150 pk sterke 1.4 TSI-motor in het vooronder is erg stil en heerlijk soepel. Als we even later de snelweg verlaten en een paar prachtige bergweggetjes beklimmen blijkt dit een heel fijne combinatie met de handgeschakelde zesbak. Er is voldoende vermogen en koppel beschikbaar en de auto heeft een altert karakter. We hebben zelfs lol in de bochten! Via het Seat Drive Profile schakelen we de Sport-stand in en merken dat de reactie op het gas nog net even alerter is en de besturing wat zwaarder.

Spaanse emotie

In de bergen blijkt dat de Ateca een heel prettig rijdende auto is. Weliswaar iets te licht in de besturing, maar met voldoende gevoel om een potje lekker bergbeklimmen niet uit de weg te gaan. Ook het onderstel past in dat plaatje. De Ateca helt nauwelijks over en blijft mooi neutraal in de bochten. Gaat het wat te snel, dat treedt er een veilig onderstuur op dat door alle elektronica aan boord snel gecorrigeerd wordt. Ja hoor, die Spaanse emotie zit er wel in. Gelukkig maar.

Het slotakkoord

Het brengt ons bij het slotakkoord. En zoals we in de inleiding al door lieten schemeren hebben ze in Spanje hun huiswerk uitstekend gedaan. De Ateca smoelt goed, is ruim, voorzien van hedendaagse features en heeft een prettig motorengamma. Kritiek? Dat hebben we eigenlijk alleen in de vorm van de leverbare kleuren, zowel voor het in- alsook het exterieur. Vanbinnen is het praktisch allemaal zwart, van buiten zijn tien van de twaalf kleuren ook wel erg veilig. Enkel Passion Red en het spraakmakende Samoa Orange weten kleur te bekennen. Wie durft daarvoor te kiezen?

Niet echt kritiek, maar meer een constatering, is het feit dat de Ateca duidelijk anders gepositioneerd wordt dan de Tiguan. Hij is een paar duizend euro goedkoper, maar het voelt ook allemaal net een stapje minder. En dat mag, daar is het prijsverschil ook naar. Kijken we naar de overige concurrenten, zoals de Sportage en Tuscon, dan blijkt de Ateca echt in het hart van het segment aan te vallen. Qua prijs, uitstraling en uitrusting staat hij heel sterk.

De Seat Ateca staat vanaf september bij de dealers. En zoals je al begrijpt is het de moeite waard dan even een kijkje in de showroom te nemen voordat je klakkeloos één van de bekende spelers in dit segment bestelt. De prijzen beginnen bij € 25.900,- voor de door ons in Spanje helaas niet beschikbare 1.0 TSI met 115 pk. De 1.4 TSI zoals wij die in de uiterste complete Xcellence-uitvoering reden kost minimaal € 31.800,-.
